College life can be more enjoyable when you have the essential things you need.  Good thing that the standard refrigerators used by every household now come with a portable version – a mini refrigerator with freezer.

Living in a dorm is not the same as your everyday life where all your needs are instantly available, like an ice-cold drink, a portable freezer will make you feel like you’re still in the comfort of your home. A mini smart fridge is a convenient way to keep your drinks, snacks, meat, fruit, and veggies in pristine condition while saving time on a grocery store trip. When buying a portable freezer, it is essential to know how to lengthen its function and enjoy its features. To save you from stress, here are several tips to ensure that you get the most out of your college dorm mini smart fridge to use for the entire school year and beyond.

Packing & Moving Your Foldable Fridge

The first step is placing your portable mini fridge into your dorm. A typical portable freezer should be upright at all times. But if your portable cooling system is a foldable fridge, you don’t have to lay it down as you can fold it to fit small spaces. Its foldable features make it perfect for a college dorm as it will save you space. Keeping it upright will save you from problems and malfunctions when you start to use it. The mini smart fridge has a long battery life, so you don’t have to plug it in immediately. But before you do, wait 24 hours to allow the system to recorrect to avoid any issues caused during transport.

Maintaining Your Portable Mini Fridge

All your things are already inside your dorm, and you have placed snacks, foods, and drinks in your mini refrigerator with freezer and plan to clean your mini fridge out weekly. You may check for rotten fruits/veggies, meat, expired milk, or other perishable goods and took them out of the portable freezer as needed. If there’s a spill in your mini portable freezer, wipe it out right away to avoid mold, mildew, bacteria, or food-borne diseases.

Pro tip: you may want to place it inside a baking soda box to absorb odors within your fridge.

Defrosting Your Portable Cooling System

When you need to leave your mini portable freezer unattended for a long time, like when you take holiday breaks, it is best to defrost them to avoid overly ice build-up and unnecessary electric issues. You may defrost your portable cooling system at least 24 hours before leaving. Here’s some tip on how to defrost your mini refrigerator with freezer:

  • Discard and remove all items inside.

You may unplug your mini portable freezer, leaving it open, and you may place a tray or a towel underneath to absorb excess water. You can also put a towel inside the fridge to prevents moisture accumulation.

  • Leave the defrosting overnight.

After overnight, wipe out any accumulated moisture and dry the trays, cloths, and towels you have used in and around the mini fridge. After that, you can also clean the drawer, racks, and shelves your fridge may have. Just ensure to avoid using abrasive and harsh cleaners as it can damage and cause bruises in your fridge. You can use hot or warm water with baking soda or soapy water to clean them. When rinsing, you can use a sponge or a clean rag and dry.

Important note: ALWAYS check that your foldable fridge is dry before closing its door to avoid bacteria and mold. Undoubtedly, you don’t want to come back from the holiday break with a moldy fridge.
